Emma Carpenter
I joined Opus in November 2025, on secondment from Sheffield Credit Union, to work on the creation of neighbourhood funds within the Sheffield Transition Financing workstream.
I'm passionate about all things mutual, community owned or co-operative. Alongside working in governance, compliance and financial inclusion at Sheffield Credit Union since 2017, I've been involved in community and not-for-profit groups big and small, including as an organiser of Sheffield's first co-operative Pride festival. I love the energy of self-organising groups, and want to create pathways to sustainability for action which exists on the margins of a political and economic system which often praises, but rarely prioritises mutual care and community vision.
My academic background is in the sociology of law, disability policy and welfare rights, and I owe many thanks to my undergrad property law tutor, Bram, who once tried to convince me that private property is one of the first concepts that babies develop an understanding of - a worldview I've been working to undermine ever since!
